erphyton literally refers to aquatic plants
growing around (on) solid surfaces. Recently, the
term "periphyton" has been extended to include the
entire community of micro-organisms that live
attached to or on solid submerged surfaces,
generally above the depth of light extinction. The
term encompasses not only algae but associated
bacteria, fungi, protozoans, rotifers, and other
small organisms.
